but let's rewind, back to earlier in the afternoon.
The reception room is was being primped and adorned. The bows were painstakingly being placed on chairs, the staff were polishing cutlery and setting the tables to perfection. It didn't take them too long to sing along with songs I was softly playing in the background. Within minutes, I was actually getting a small request list from the staff, while setup was going on! Everything was ready, the room looked wonderful, and the wedding MC came by to go through some details for the night ahead.
The guests started to trickle in, a little piano music playing softly to welcome them. The MC asked the guests to be seated. My Bride and Groom had prepared each couple in their wedding party a unique entrance song that had special meaning to them. Each song played right on cue, not from the beginning of the song, but played right on the "sweet spot". The atmosphere was overwhelmingly warm and joyous. The wedding party hadn't been aware this was coming, so each couple had a few moments on the dance floor to strut and let their personality shine! The Bride and Groom were introduced next to thunderous applause. The perfect sedgway to lead seamlessly into their first dance as Husband and Wife.
In mock sternness, the MC went through the house rules, "If you would like our newlywed couple to kiss this evening, we need to hear something with love in it - as a solo, duet or group". The first table timidly stood up and with shaky voices sang the opening lines, "Love and marriage, love and marriage, goes together like a horse and carriage". Then abruptly stopped - that's all they knew. Without missing a beat and before the couple started to smooch, I had the full song playing in the background. Everyone in the room starting singing. Then the next table ambled up and sang "Love Me Tender". They really didn't know anything past that. Again, up went the iconic Elvis song to the delight of the head table and guests alike. Many more tables came upon the dance floor throughout the night in an atmosphere of fun and frivolity and lightheartedness.
Oh, the speeches? They were a ton of fun, too! The Best Man shared how he and the Groom got into plenty of mischief as kids. He said he kept a record book of all their moments and he leaned over to grab something. It gave me an opportunity to play the "Bad Boys" theme song from Cops. He heard the music, and was struggling to keep a straight face. He proceeded to bring out a HUGE book. It took a few moments for the laughter to subdue. He came up later in the evening and told me he was thinking that would be an awesome clip to play at that moment and he wanted to know who told me to play it. I shrugged, "Nobody". His reply: "That was just awesome. But I don't believe you".
The Sister of the Bride had created a slideshow to be played during dessert. While setting up her computer, much to her horror, all sound shut off. She was completely panicked. I assured her it would be fine, and encouraged her to go enjoy the cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Quietly behind the scenes, I took some time and set up everything. I met her later at her table to say "When you're ready for your slide show, just push the space bar.". I had made sure that her computer wouldn't go into sleep mode, copied the video onto my computer and had everything ready. It went off beautifully. When she came to say thank you, I handed her back her laptop with all the wires neatly tucked back into her bag.
The Bride and Groom had already had their first dance, the bar was open and the MC felt relaxed to have his duties done for the night. And it was only 9:30 p.m. I made an announcement to let everyone know that the bar was open, and dancing would start within a few minutes. I put on a top forty hit song, ("Moves Like Jagger" - Maroon 5). The dance floor filled up and it stayed that way with every one of the Bride's requests or her Guests' requests all while mixing in favorites and oldies that I knew would be a hit! When a request came in, I was able to oblige in every circumstance. I tether my iPhone to my DJ pool of songs, I have access to absolutely every song. One of the Groomsmen wanted to sing along to a Garth Brooks song, so I pulled up the lyrics to assist him and off he went! There were countless other fun and memorable moments. The time flew, until I was ordered to stop playing music by the reception site at 1:00 a.m.
The wedding had started with 120 guests. By the end at 1:00 a.m., I counted roughly 80 guests milling around the room congratulating and hugging, (some still with their ties around their heads) They really, REALLY wanted to keep dancing, but the hall has a strict policy about the end time of their events. Before taking down my equipment, I thanked the Bride and Groom for allowing me to be involved in their special day and they let me know that the evening was wonderful - exceeding all expectation.
If this sound like a dream wedding, it was! This is the kind of wedding reception atmosphere I help to create. I truly love being a part of weddings, but don't put out promotional signage to distract from your party atmosphere. The entire event is about the Bride and Groom and celebrating their wedding. I get many thanks and great feedback at the end of the night and I have a great time too!
